In Short

Claude Code is Anthropic’s AI coding agent, well regarded for handling complex, multi-step coding tasks with good judgment about when to proceed and when to ask. It began as a terminal tool and now runs in several places: the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains, a desktop app, and the web. All of them share the same engine and project settings.

Where Claude Code Runs

SurfaceWhat it is for
TerminalThe full-featured CLI for working in a local project
VS Code extensionInline diffs, @-mentions, and plan review inside the editor (also installs in Cursor)
JetBrains pluginIntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, and other JetBrains IDEs
Desktop appVisual diff review, several sessions side by side, and scheduled tasks
WebRun tasks at claude.ai/code with no local setup, including from the Claude mobile app

It also plugs into team workflows: GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD for automated review and triage, @Claude in Slack to turn a bug report into a pull request, and scheduled tasks that run in the cloud while your computer is off. On Team and Enterprise plans, Code Review installs as a GitHub App and reviews new pull requests automatically.

What Claude Code Is Best For

  • Complex multi-file changes: tasks that span multiple files and require understanding how the system fits together
  • Debugging and root cause analysis: finding where bugs originate and fixing them properly
  • Feature implementation: building new features from a description, including appropriate tests
  • Refactoring: restructuring code while preserving behavior
  • Codebase exploration: understanding unfamiliar code before making changes
  • Routine chores: tests, lint fixes, dependency updates, and release notes

How Claude Code Works

When you give it a task, Claude Code:

  1. Reads the relevant files in your codebase
  2. Plans the changes needed
  3. Writes or edits the code
  4. Runs tests or commands to verify the result
  5. Iterates if something doesn’t work as expected

You stay in control: Claude Code asks for confirmation before making significant changes or running commands, and you can tune how much it may do without asking. A CLAUDE.md file in your project gives it standing instructions, skills package repeatable workflows, hooks run your own commands before or after its actions, and MCP servers connect it to tools like issue trackers. For bigger jobs it can split work across subagents.

It runs on Anthropic’s current models. A sensible default is Sonnet 5.5 for everyday work, with Opus 5.5 or Fable 5.1 for harder, longer tasks; see Claude for the lineup and model routing for the general idea.

Getting Better Results

Be specific about scope. “Fix the login bug” is harder to act on than “The handleSubmit function in components/LoginForm.tsx doesn’t validate the email field before submitting.”

Share project context. Put the project’s purpose and conventions in CLAUDE.md so you don’t repeat them in every session. See Set up CLAUDE.md, SKILL.md, and PITFALLS.md.

Review before accepting. Claude Code proposes changes and you control whether to apply them. Always read what it’s planning to do.

Honest Limitations

  • Usage adds up. Heavy use draws down plan limits or API credits quickly, especially on the most capable models. See How to Cut Coding Agent Token Waste.
  • Anthropic models only, by default. The CLI and IDE versions can connect through some third-party cloud providers, but Claude Code is built around Claude.
  • Complex architectures need guidance. Very large codebases may require more direction about where to look.
  • Review is still your job. Like any coding agent, its output needs review and tests before it reaches production.

Alternatives Worth Knowing

  • Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, with local CLI and IDE use plus cloud tasks
  • OpenCode, an open-source agent that works with many model providers
  • Meta Muse Code, Meta’s terminal coding agent
  • Cursor, an AI-native editor; better if you want completions and the agent in one editor
  • Cline, an open-source VS Code extension with similar agent capabilities
  • Augment Code, an assistant focused on whole-codebase context for large repositories

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Claude Code best for?

Claude Code is best for developers who want an AI coding agent that works directly with their existing codebase. It handles tasks that require reading multiple files, running commands, and iterating, and it can work in the terminal, inside VS Code or JetBrains, in a desktop app, or in the browser.

How is Claude Code different from using Claude in the browser?

Claude chat is a general AI assistant. Claude Code is a specialized coding agent that can read your codebase, run shell commands, write and edit code, and complete development tasks on its own, with your approval for risky steps.

Does Claude Code only work in the terminal?

No. It started as a terminal tool, but it now also runs as a VS Code extension (which also works in Cursor), a JetBrains plugin, a desktop app, and on the web at claude.ai/code, including from the Claude mobile app. All of them use the same engine, so your CLAUDE.md files, settings, and MCP servers carry across.

Do you need to be an experienced developer to use Claude Code?

It helps. Claude Code is designed for developers, and it is most valuable for people who can review and understand the code it produces. The IDE, desktop, and web versions lower the barrier compared with the terminal, but you still need to judge whether a change is correct.
