On-Device AI

Simple Definition

On-device AI is AI that processes data and runs models directly on your device — your phone, laptop, or tablet — rather than sending that data to a remote server.

The AI inference happens locally, which means your data stays on your device.

Where You’re Already Using On-Device AI

On-device AI is already built into products most people use every day:

  • Face ID and fingerprint unlock — facial recognition runs locally on your phone
  • Live captions — real-time transcription on Android and some laptops
  • Photography — portrait mode, night mode, and scene detection on phones
  • Predictive keyboard — next-word suggestions on your phone
  • Voice assistants — parts of Siri and Google Assistant run locally
  • Apple Intelligence — Apple’s suite of on-device AI features in iOS 18+

Why On-Device AI Is Growing

Chips are getting better at running AI efficiently — Apple’s Neural Engine, Qualcomm Snapdragon AI, and Intel NPUs are all designed to run AI workloads without draining the battery. This makes increasingly capable on-device AI practical on everyday hardware.

Current Limitations

On-device AI runs smaller, less powerful models than cloud AI. For complex reasoning, writing, or analysis, cloud-based AI tools will outperform what’s practical on a device today — though the gap is narrowing.

  • Local LLM — the language model version of on-device AI
  • SLM — small language models, often used for on-device AI
  • Inference — the process of running an AI model to get a result
