OpenAI Dots vs Meta Muse
Quick Answer
OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse both give you an AI that keeps working toward your goals from its own cloud computer. They are aimed at different people. Dots is a premium, work-oriented agent inside ChatGPT, available on the higher-priced plans and built to hand work off to ChatGPT Work and Codex. Muse is a consumer agent with a free tier, available in the Muse app and WhatsApp, built around everyday errands such as booking, buying, filling out forms, and lowering bills.
If price matters, Muse is the only one you can try for free. If your work runs on ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams, Dots fits more naturally.

Who Each One Is Built For
Dots is pitched at professionals and teams. OpenAI’s examples are a developer monitoring customer feedback and turning it into fixes, or a scientist rerunning analyses as new data arrives. It can reach your local files through the ChatGPT desktop app, work with more than 4,000 apps through ChatGPT plugins, and delegate to ChatGPT Work for documents or Codex for code.
Muse is pitched at everyone. Meta’s examples are planning a party and sending invites, booking travel, negotiating bills, and turning a recipe reel into a grocery list. You can rename it, change its avatar, and talk to it in WhatsApp like a friend. Muse for Small Business, launched September 29 in the US and Canada, adds business connectors including Asana, Box, Canva, Dropbox, Figma, Notion, QuickBooks, Shopify, Slack, Stripe, and Zoom.
Security Design
Both isolate the agent on its own cloud machine, and both say the model never sees your passwords.
Muse adds an unusual layer: Sentinel, a separate agent on the same VM that must approve before Muse can reach the internet, and asks you when needed. That puts a gatekeeper outside the agent doing the work. Meta has also announced a Confidential VM that would encrypt everything with a key only you hold, but it is not available yet.
Dots relies on Custom Rules, a read-only mode for proactive research, and Auto-review, which checks account-affecting actions against your instructions and OpenAI’s safety requirements. OpenAI is also working with Microsoft to bring specialist dots under Agent 365 governance for enterprises.
Neither design has had extensive independent security review yet. Treat vendor claims as design intent.
Approvals and Purchases
Dots lets you build an approval policy: each type of action can run freely, run only when requested, ask first, or be handed back to you. Muse asks before sensitive actions like sending email or buying, lets you set read-only or send access per app, and keeps an audit trail of past and planned actions. Engadget recommends setting Muse to “always ask” at first.
Purchasing is a bigger part of Muse. It checks out through Link by Stripe using a one-time card, and Meta says it is the first AI agent covered by Link’s purchase protections. Dots was not launched as a shopping agent.
Privacy and Training
This is where caution matters most for Muse. It is designed to connect to email, calendars, payments, and health data, and it learns from your conversations to make unprompted suggestions. Meta says you can opt out of training, that it does not share Muse data with its ad systems, and that you can tell Muse to forget specific things. Training appears to be on by default.
For Dots, content in Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces is excluded from training by default. Personal plans follow ChatGPT’s data controls, and deleting a dot’s memories requires deleting the dot. See AI data retention for what to check.
Cost
Muse’s free tier makes it the cheapest way to try a proactive agent, with a usage meter that tells you when you are running low. Dots requires a top-tier ChatGPT plan. Coverage differs on whether the $100 Pro tier qualifies, so check your account. OpenAI says chatting with a dot does not count toward limits, while background work and tasks it runs in Codex or Work draw on your allowance.
Choose OpenAI Dots If
Your work lives in ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams, you want an agent that can write documents and code through Work and Codex, you need it on a business plan with admin controls, or you want to watch its computer while it works.
Choose Meta Muse If
You want to try a personal agent for free or for less, your tasks are everyday errands and shopping, you already use WhatsApp, or you are a small business in the US or Canada using the tools Muse for Small Business connects to.
When Neither Is Ideal
If you are uncomfortable giving any vendor deep access to email and payments, or want to choose the model and keep data on your own hardware, look at OpenClaw. If you are in the EU or UK on a personal plan, neither is currently available. For work focused on email and documents in Anthropic’s ecosystem, Claude Duet is the third option.
Final Recommendation
Choose by audience and budget. Dots is a work agent for people already paying for premium ChatGPT. Muse is a consumer agent with the lowest barrier to entry and the most privacy questions to settle first. Whichever you pick, start with approvals on for everything and connect accounts one at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Meta Muse free?
Muse has a free tier with limited usage, and a payment card is required to sign up. TechCrunch reported paid plans at launch of $20 a month (Power) and $100 a month (Maximum). OpenAI Dots has no free option; it needs ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium.
Is Meta Muse the same as Meta AI?
No. Meta AI is Meta's chat assistant in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Muse is a separate personal agent at muse.ai that carries out ongoing tasks. Muse Code is Meta's coding agent, and Muse Spark and Muse Wonder are model families.
Does Meta train on my Muse data?
Meta says you can opt out of having Muse interactions used to train its models, and that Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with its ad systems. Training appears to be on by default, so check the setting. With Dots, business workspace content is excluded from training by default and personal plans follow ChatGPT's data controls.
Which is better for work?
Dots is aimed more at work: it runs in ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams, can hand tasks to ChatGPT Work and Codex, and is available on business plans. Muse is consumer-first, though Muse for Small Business adds connectors for tools like Slack, Notion, Shopify, QuickBooks, and Canva in the US and Canada.
