AI Overviews

Simple Definition

AI Overviews is a feature in Google Search that shows an AI-generated paragraph (or a few paragraphs) at the very top of the results page, before any links, that directly answers your search query.

It’s Google’s version of having an AI summarize the web for you before you dig into individual results.

What It Looks Like

When you search for something like “how to remove a stripped screw,” Google may show a summary box at the top with step-by-step instructions pulled together from multiple sources, each step citing the source page.

Why It Matters

  • For searchers: You often get the answer without clicking anywhere.
  • For website owners and creators: Less traffic may reach your site if the AI answers the question completely.
  • For content strategy: Structured, factual, well-sourced content is more likely to get cited inside an AI Overview.

How AI Overviews Choose Sources

Google’s AI Overviews tend to pull from:

  • Well-established, authoritative websites
  • Content that directly answers the question
  • Pages with clear structure (headings, lists, step-by-step formatting)
  • Sources with strong E-E-A-T signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

Relationship to SEO

AI Overviews have shifted some SEO thinking. Getting featured in an AI Overview doesn’t guarantee a click, but it does signal authority. Optimizing for AI Overviews overlaps significantly with Generative Engine Optimization.
