Generative Engine Optimization

Simple Definition

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of writing and structuring content so that AI tools, like Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and ChatGPT with web search, are more likely to use your content when they generate their answers.

Think of it as SEO adapted for the age of AI search: instead of optimizing for a human clicking a link, you’re optimizing for an AI reading and citing your page.

Why GEO Matters

As more people use AI search tools to get direct answers, traditional click-through traffic is declining for many types of informational content. GEO is about making sure your content still gets seen, as a cited source inside AI-generated answers.

What GEO Looks Like in Practice

  • Answer questions directly and clearly at the top of the page
  • Use structured formats: bullet points, numbered lists, headers, that are easy for AI to parse
  • Include definitions for key terms in your content
  • Be specific and factual: AI models favor precise, verifiable information
  • Cite your sources and demonstrate expertise
  • Write for humans first: AI models trained on human-preferred content perform better on natural writing

GEO vs. Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking high in a list of links. GEO focuses on being the source an AI system quotes when it answers a question. These goals often overlap, good SEO content tends to do well at GEO too, but the emphasis is different.
