Answer Engine Optimization
Simple Definition
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing content specifically so that AI-powered answer tools, like Perplexity, voice assistants (Siri, Alexa), and AI chatbots with web access, will surface it when users ask questions.
Where traditional SEO is about ranking in a list, AEO is about being the answer.
How AEO Relates to GEO
AEO and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are closely related and sometimes used interchangeably. The distinction some people draw:
- AEO: focused on getting into any AI answer system, including voice and older featured snippet systems
- GEO: more specifically focused on generative AI systems that synthesize multi-source answers
In practice, both require similar strategies.
AEO Strategies That Work
- Write clear, direct answers: start your response to a question within the first few sentences
- Use Q&A formatting: structure content around specific questions people ask
- Keep answers concise: short, well-structured answers are easier for AI to extract
- Build authority: AI answer systems favor established, trustworthy sources
- Add structured data: FAQ schema and other structured data help AI understand your content’s intent
Practical Example
Instead of writing a 2,000-word article about vitamin D and hoping for traffic, you write it in FAQ format with a clear answer to “What does vitamin D do?” in the first paragraph. AI tools find this easier to cite accurately.
